Assignment # 5
Part- 2
Dear, Governor Rod Blagojevich,
I live I Calhoun, IL and I am writing you about some problems that I think need to be addressed in Richland and the surrounding counties. I have been doing a newspaper journal on all the meth problems. One problem I see with all of this is you can get all the information needed to make this powerful drug right off the internet. The internet is a good tool if used correctly. I believe these web sites need to be shutdown as soon as possible!
While I was doing research on this topic I looked up the Illinois state police web site and it even had a list of ingredients that is used in meth production which really surprised me. I agree with the law that is coming in effect that states anhydrous theft is a felony and the farmer is not liable if the thief is hurt on the farmers ground. Thieves of anhydrous should be put in prison for life as far as I’m concerned because, when they get out they will go back to what they were doing that got them in prison the first time. Meth use in this state has increased dramatically with in the last few years. Please, consider advising some laws that will crack down on all the meth use in the state of Illinois.
Sincerely,
Mark Craig

Part 1
Methamphetamine Epidemic
I live in Calhoun, IL we don’t receive a newspaper at all from our small town because if we did there wouldn’t be anything in it except about all of the local meth bust. So we get the Olney Daily Mail and that is where I found some of the news about local meth bust just this year I also found a lot about meth problems on the internet. Since the year 1997 there has been a huge increase in the arrest of meth abuse from 1997 drug arrests climbed from 23 to 103, criminal arrests from 112 to 253. In the Carmi Times there was a sheriff interviewed and he said he had been an officer for 24 years and said that this is the worst problem he has ever encountered. The major problem with the increase in making meth is that all meth makers can get almost all of the ingredients to make meth can be purchased at a local Wal-Mart.
Methamphetamine is commonly known as speed, meth, chalk, Christina or Tina. In its smoked form it is often referred to as ice, crystal, crank, and glass. It is a white, odorless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol. The drug is made easily in clandestine laboratories with relatively inexpensive over-the-counter ingredients. These factors combine to make methamphetamine a drug with high potential for widespread abuse.
Methamphetamine creates a powerful high that can last for hours and sometimes days. The chemical ingredients used in its production are poisonous and very deadly. Innocent family members of meth addicts become unfortunate victims of the effects of the drug. The extreme high produced by meth ends dramatically, with paranoid, delusional, and often, aggressive behavior. The violent behavior is often directed at any one around them.
Studies estimate 90 percent of abused children placed in the nation's welfare system are living in homes with substance abuse. Over 60 percent of all violent crimes committed are said to be drug-related. The growing methamphetamine problem is having a devastating affect on families everywhere. A 2000 National Household survey on Drug Abuse estimated that one in 25 people had tried meth sometime in their lives. In the past four years, the use of meth has increased substantially in Illinois.
Instructions for producing meth are available to anyone on the Internet this is where I think Illinois needs to start, by getting rid of all sites that are made containing this information. In Richland County just last year there have been 20 meth lab seizures. In Illinois alone there have been 1,099 meth lab seizures last year. The use of this drug is devastating our homes, our schools and our state. Many teenagers out there are using this drug and that is why there have been so many problems within the school. Not only are there just young people that use this drug but middle aged adults use this drug exclusively also. People that get high on this drug have no idea what is going on in there life, that is so precious.
Every one who uses this drug has no idea what is going on in there bodies. This drug affects the central nervous system. Also meth causes increased activity, decreased appetite, and a general sense of well-being there are some over the counter drugs that with effect you in about the same manor if you O.D. on it.
Methamphetamine users can be identified by:
-Signs of agitation
-Excited speech
-Loss of appetite
-Increased physical activity levels
-Dilated pupils
-High blood pressure
-Occasional episodes of sudden and violent behavior
-Intense paranoia
-Visual and auditory hallucinations
-A tendency to compulsively clean and groom and repetitively sort and disassemble objects, such as cars and other mechanical devices
Just to name a few.
An article found in the Olney Daily Mail in the beginning of March of this year there was a meth lab discovered 4 a.m. on a Friday at 526 W. Cherry Street. This lab was found by a tip from a previous arrest. The materials were removed out of the house by the police and were disposed of by Elit Environmental Services later that morning. This lab was right in the middle of Olney with houses all the way around it. There were 4 arrests made that day and there was a possibility of more.
I work at a farm supply store in West Liberty, IL were I fill anhydrous tanks for farmers so they can put nitrogen on their corn. Anhydrous ammonia is a key ingredient in the manufacturing meth. I see it first hand at work on some of the anhydrous nurse wagons that the thieves will try anything to just get a little liquid out of them tanks. Some of these thieves will steal the anhydrous and then they will put the cap back on the valve then they will open the valve up so when you get ready to fill the tank up again that cap will blow off and could hit you in the face possible blind you permanently. These thieves have no common sense at all and aren’t afraid of anything. Just this year a farmer had a tank out in his front yard in a well lit area along a highway and a person stole anhydrous out of it and then left the valve open and it ended up killing a large portion of the farmer’s front yard.
Working with this supply company there are many guide lines to follow while working with anhydrous. While filling anhydrous you must always wear goggles and gloves. Then there are stickers on every tank that states what the farmer can do to prevent the theft of anhydrous. The farmer’s job is to ensure that tanks are placed in lighted and secure area. Also if possible, place tanks where they can be seen from the residence and where the flow valves face either the drive way or your house. This will make it easier to spot individuals who may be near the tank.
The only question I have for all of this nonsense is why? I don’t understand why people want to go out and get high all the time. Another thing that gets me is the police will only come out and look at a scene if the theft is more than $500. Where I work we will call in some times and tell police about happenings but no one can do anything about it unless the thief is caught in the act. This epidemic is spreading fast and it takes everyone to slow it down, the future doesn’t look good in my eyes.
All information I found was out of my local newspaper and the internet.

Community Legend
The Woods
In this essay I’m going to compare the story of my legend and a legend I found on the internet.
My legend that I wrote about was about a big woods in a little town called Calhoun where two old men were out coon hunting one night and they saw a ghost in the air behind a tree. One man was scared so bad that he had a heart attack over the ordeal and died later at the hospital. The other legend I'm comparing is about a boat in Louisiana where it was said that there where people held captive on the boat and many people died in the boat years ago. In this story people have reported seeing the ghost and some have been scared so bad that they have coincidentally had heart attacks just like my story.
The comparance between these two stories is that they both saw ghost and have had heart attacks over the ordeal. This was the closest story I could find, there are many differences between them. For instance my story happened in a boat where years ago people where held prisoner in this boat and many people died of hunger. My story happened in a woods and it came to pass there was no big story behind it than some people seeing a ghost in a woods and it freaked them out so much that a man died. Another difference is that the story on the boat there had been many famous people there on that boat some even died on the boat and some say they have seen them wondering around on the boat. My legend there is nothing famous about it but some people do believe.
In conclusion, people have seen ghost every where; these two stories are great examples of how people react to seeing ghost.

One day my friend Marcus and I went raccoon hunting and we were looking for a good place to let our dogs out to get on a good trail. Marcus was driving and I said, “how about we let the dogs out here,” and Marcus looked at me and said, “Are you nuts, have you ever heard about what happened in those woods?” Marcus went on and said, “There is a myth about those woods, old man Johnson died in those woods”. The story goes that Mr. Johnson and Mr. Donuhue went out to the woods one night to go coon hunting. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Donuhue thot they were on a hot trail of a coon at least that’s what they thot it was, when they arrived to the tree where the dogs were barking a ghost appeared and it scared Mr. Johnson so bad that he had a heart attack and died in those woods. The myth still goes on in a little town called Calhoun were no one will go out into the woods at least those that know about the story.

The woods
Hey, Mark have you ever heard the storie about that woods behind Mr. Millers house? No I havent' Marcus what about it I replied," Well i'll tell you about it but not many believe it", ok I said. He leaned over and started in a whisper and said one wet dreary night old man Donuhue and Johnson went out to do some coon hunting like every coon season. They both went out into the woods and only one hour later Mr. Donuhue came out by himself running as hard as he could. Mr. Johnson had had a heart attack and Mr. Donuhue was running for help.
Mr Johnson made it to the hospital but it was too late he was dead on arrival. People asked Old man Donuhue What happened in that woods and he desribed this way "we went into the woods because we were on a hot trail of a coon, the dogs were barking and we thot we had a coon treed for sure, but we soon found out that it wasn't a coon they were barking at, it was a big white spot floating in the air and making all sorts of ear drum shattering squeals", "better known as a ghost" Marcus said, Mr. Donuhue vowes up and down that Johnson died because they saw a ghost in that woods which pushed Mr. Johnson over the limit and he had a heart attack which was fatal. Marcus replied that this happened in the early 1970s and there are still some that believe this story of the ghost in Mr.Millers Woods and will never step foot in that woods ever.

Draft #2
Dress Code
Say No Too the Dress Code
To the President, and the board, of Olney Central College.
First, I will ask you why do we need this dress code I see no reason for it. This school is operating just fine with out a dress code. Being able to dress the way we want to creates a
more beautiful and colorful school for you and me. Wearing all the same clothes will just be boring: no color, no beauty. When people can express their selves, they feel better about themselves therefore, fewer problems with students.
Most of the time when you do not have a dress code, you can tell whom the jocks, preps, and the geeks are in the school and I like it just fine. You think that a dress code will make us, the students, “less conscious of diversity and increase equality,” but you can tell what type of person they are the first second you talk to them. I know people that live in California, who have went to other schools with the dress codes, they hated it, I have told them about our dress code and they said it would be a very bad idea for the school was to do this. Board members, you also need to think about the school in general, I think a dress code will make you lose a lot of students because of the dress code. Therefore, if you lose students you lose money to run and operate this school efficiently.
The loss of money to the school also hurts the community around the school.i'm sure the community would not go for the dress code. A dress code will cause a lot of down sides to the school it would be smart not to do this. Being a college student, I know how hard it is to make money and it seems like money just disappears. Students do not have the money to go and buy a completely new wardrobe just to go to school. I know there are many other schools that have done this for instance Sacremento,California, and every one there hates to go to school because of their dress code.
I have known people that have moved because their school goes to a dress code and alot of it they couldnt afford to dress there kids every year. I believe this dress code can interfere with free speech I believe that we should express ourselves the best we know how if we have this dress code no one will be able to express them selves. Though I do believe that people should be able to wear what they want but some clothes I agree they are just plain gaudy. Yes I believe that clothing should be monitored so people aren’t wearing some clothes that are offensive and distracting to others. If a dress code prevails you need to spice it up and make it fun like different types and colors of clothes every day and have a dress down day on Fridays so it wont be so boring and bland and i beleive you the school should pay for our attire.
Clothes that are plain no logos and plain shoes don’t add character to any student it would be more like a prison camp then a school. No need to waste money when you just let everyone wear what he or she wants. I have talked to many students and most of them wouldn,t go for the dress code. If this school took a vote I believe that the school board would be out number at least 90%. Most of my friends would rather just likes to wear blue jeans and boots.
In conclusion, President and Board of OCC so many other students agree with this decision so please reconsider the idea of using the dress code and just stay the way we are it would be a smart thing to do.

In my own words a blog is a web site full of writings that people have sent in for any one to read. You can write anything you want on the blog but also remember this is public web site so don’t get to personal, but you can post it for other people to read like in this family we can write about what’s going on in the family and family members can log on and read what we have written. On blogger you can look at anybody’s writings in the world so you can even get ideas for essays off of it. Bloggger is a fun web site to get on just to see all the different writers out there.
Here is the process in which you can get started on blogger. Peer Critiques Assignment #2
Corey Brown
Critiqued By, Mark Craig
This assignment was about dress codes and if this school was to use it how would the students react to this. I believe what you wrote was against the dress code but you think the school should enforce some rules that prohibit certain things. Your goal is to tell what you think of the dress code and that you were against it in many ways. I agree with all that you said about the dress code and I agree that some things should be enforced for the safety and well being of the students. Of what I read I liked it very much.
Your main idea started off by saying how clothing does not take away from the learning process. Then how some stuff can affect others in the class by wearing things that offend them. Then you talked on how the school should enforce a dress code but not a full dress code that will make you wear full attire and make the school feel like a military school but limit certain things. You also stated the first amendment in your essay and it fitted in very well on what you were talking about on free speech and of the press issue. You then ended this argument by telling how you felt in the last paragraph and summed it up.
Your assignment was to tell us what you think of a dress code for this school and how it would affect this school and if you were for or against it. Which you were definitely against the dress code Corey. You met all of your goals of your assignment and I liked it a lot I agree with this paper 100%. You were writing to the board as if there was a real dress code problem this essay was very authentic.
There were a few grammar errors in this essay over all pretty good.
When this issue was brought up in my high school the overall decision was to make a more fair dress code not limiting the brand of clothing but to limit the sizes. The more fair should be just fairer in this sentence. No clothes that were to baggy or to tight were permitted. The first to in the sentence should be spelled too because you are ma king a point. No clothes that showed to much cleavage, or offensive markings was allowed. The to in this sentence is also misspelled it should be too because you are making a point.
The thesis statement I thought in this essay was at the beginning. The thesis is dress of students does not take away from the learning process of a college atmosphere. One of your transition sentences was I do not feel that there is anything wrong with expressing social class by what one wears. Then you go on from there expressing your feelings. All of the transition sentences and then your thesis statement goes with what your talking about.
This essay needed very little work done to it but there were some places that could use some work. You need to know how to use certain words to describe your self better.

Assignment # 2
Draft # 1
Say No Too the Dress Code
To the President, and the board, of Olney Central College. First, I will ask you why do we need this dress code I see no reason for it. This school is operating just fine with out a dress code. Being able to dress the way we want to create a more beautiful and colorful school for you and me. Wearing all the same clothes will just be boring no color no beauty. When people can express their selves, they feel better about themselves therefore fewer problems with students. Any way when you do not have a dress code, you can tell whom the jocks, preps, and the geeks are in the school and I like it just fine. You think that a dress code will make us the students less conscious of diversity and increase equality but you can tell what type of person they are the first second you talk to them. I know people that live in California, who have went to other schools with the dress code, they hated it, I have told them about it this issue, and they said it was a bad idea for the school to do this. Board members you also need to think about the school in general I think a dress code will make you lose a lot of students because of this. Therefore, if you lose students you lose money to run and operate this school efficiently. The loss of money to the school also hurts the community around the school. A dress code will cause a lot of down sides to the school it would be smart not to do this. Being a college student, I know how hard it is to make money and it seems like money just disappears. Students do not have the money to go and buy a completely new wardrobe just to go to school. I know there are many other schools that have done this but every one there hates to go to school because of this. I have known people that have moved because their school goes to a dress code. I believe this dress code can interfere with free speech I believe that we should express our selves the best we know how if we have this dress code no one will be able to express them selves. Though I do believe that people should be able to wear what they want but some clothes I agree they are just plain gaudy. Yes I believe that clothing should be monitored so people aren’t wearing some clothes that are offensive to others. With a dress code if it comes to that you need to make it fun like different types and colors of clothes every day and have a dress down day on Fridays so it wont be so boring and bland. Clothes that are plain no logos and plain shoes don’t add character to any student it would be more like a prison camp then school. No need to waste money when you just let everyone wear what he or she want. I have talked to my friends about this dress code and most of my friends he just likes to wear blue jeans and work boots. In conclusion, President and Board of OCC so many other students agree with this decision so please reconsider the idea of using the dress code and just stay the way we are it would be a smart thing to do.
